Your body is talking. Let’s listen.

Integrative medicine guided by the latest research, for people who are ready to be heard.

Sophia Shoha, ND, smiling outdoors among palm trees

About

I knew it wasn’t in my head.

Starting in high school, I spent years living with a complex chronic illness that doctors couldn’t explain: constant pain, brain fog, anxiety and sleepless nights. I was told I was fine because I looked healthy. It took integrative doctors who recognized a constellation of symptoms to finally put the pieces together. I’ve always felt called to heal. Now I get to help others the way I wish I had been helped.

I’ve been the patient who looked fine on paper. I’ll never treat you like a lab result.

— Dr. Sophia Shoha, ND

Treating the whole person

Nothing happens in isolation

Every system in your body is in conversation with the others. A gut issue can show up as anxiety. Poor sleep can show up in your hormones. That’s why I look at all of it, together.

Closely connected to

And to every other system, more quietly. The fainter lines show those.

Tap any system, or the center, to see what it talks to.

About

I became the doctor I needed.

Dr. Sophia Shoha, ND. Naturopathic doctor in Los Angeles, San Diego and virtually across California, for people who’ve been told they’re fine but know something isn’t right.

Sophia Shoha, ND, smiling outdoors among palm trees

My story

It wasn’t in my head.

I started not feeling well in high school. It began with pain, and by college it was much worse: pain at a 10 out of 10, extreme brain fog, neurological symptoms, depression, anxiety, and nights I couldn’t sleep at all.

My mom knew something wasn’t right. We went from doctor to doctor, about twelve in all. Because I looked healthy on the surface, I was told I was fine and that I needed psychological help. They made me feel crazy.

Things changed when I found integrative doctors who recognized a constellation of symptoms that didn’t fit one neat diagnosis. Testing showed Lyme disease, but even after treatment I wasn’t better, until someone raised mold. Piece by piece, different doctors added what they knew, and it finally came together. I had answers, and I knew it wasn’t in my head.

Today I’m great. I’ve always felt called to heal, and now I get to help others the way I wish I had been helped.

Approach

Your life doesn’t fit a template. Neither should your health.

You’ll be heard

Your experience is real information. I listen first, believe you, and piece together the full picture before deciding anything.

Symptoms are messages

So are your labs, often long before symptoms show up. Reading both is how we find the cause.

You’ll understand your body

What’s happening, why, and how your treatment works, so you can make it work better for years to come.

It’s not us versus them. It’s us, for you. I work alongside your other doctors and practitioners, so your care fits together.

Home / Hormones and fertility

Hormones and fertility

Hormones shape your energy, mood, sleep, skin, libido and fertility, at every age. When something feels off, there’s usually a reason, and we can find it.

Women’s hormones

Care for every stage

Choose a stage of life to see common concerns I help with.

Your cycle is a monthly report card on your health. Pain, irregularity and big mood swings are common, but they are not something you have to live with.

  • Irregular or missing periods
  • Painful or heavy periods
  • PMS and PMDD
  • PCOS
  • Endometriosis support
  • Fibroid support
  • Hormonal acne
  • Coming off birth control

Signs your hormones may need attention, at any age

  • Low energy
  • Low libido
  • Weight changes
  • Anxiety or low mood
  • Poor sleep
  • Hair thinning
  • Cravings
  • Brain fog
  • Cold hands and feet

Men’s hormones

Not just a women’s issue

Testosterone and other hormones shift with age, stress and sleep. Low energy and low drive often have a measurable cause.

  • Low testosterone
  • Low energy and drive
  • Low libido
  • Muscle loss and recovery
  • Weight and metabolism
  • Hormone therapy, including BioTE

Fertility

For both partners

Fertility starts months before conception, and sperm health matters as much as egg health. I work alongside your fertility team.

  • Preconception planning
  • Trying to conceive
  • Egg and sperm quality
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Support during IVF and IUI
  • Thyroid and fertility

Testing

Look deeper than “normal”

Standard labs often check a few values on one day. When it helps, we go further, so your plan is based on data instead of guesswork.

Hormones

Comprehensive hormone panels

Estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and cortisol, including how your body breaks them down.

Thyroid

Full thyroid panel

TSH, free T3 and T4, reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies.

Metabolism

Blood sugar and insulin

Fasting insulin, HbA1c and lipids, key for PCOS, energy and long-term health.

Gut

GI testing

Digestion, inflammation and the gut bacteria that help clear excess estrogen.

Genetics

Genetic and methylation testing

How you process hormones, nutrients like folate and B12, and toxins.

Environment

Toxin testing

Exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals, metals and mold.

Cycle mapping

Hormones across your whole cycle

A month-long hormone test shows how your hormones rise and fall, not just where they sit on one day.

At-home tracking

Daily cycle data

At-home hormone monitors track your cycle in real time, so we can see your patterns month to month.

Therapies

Natural first, evidence always

Foundations

Nutrition, sleep, stress and movement, tailored to your cycle, labs and life stage.

Targeted support

Botanical medicine and supplements chosen for your results, plus IV and micronutrient therapy when you need faster repletion.

Hormone therapy

Bioidentical hormone therapy, including BioTE, prescribed and monitored with regular lab checks.

I work alongside your OB-GYN, fertility specialist and other doctors, so your care fits together.

Questions

Common questions

Do you offer DUTCH testing?

Yes. The DUTCH test measures hormones and how your body breaks them down, and a cycle-mapping version tracks them across a full month. It’s one of several options, and we choose the test that fits your questions.

Can I use an at-home tracker like Mira?

Yes. At-home urine hormone monitors like Mira give daily data on your cycle. Bring it to your visit, and we’ll use it alongside your labs and symptoms.

When in my cycle should hormones be tested?

It depends on what we’re looking for. Some hormones are best checked on specific days, and some questions need a full month of data. I’ll tell you exactly when to test.

Testing

Know your numbers early

Many chronic diseases start years before symptoms. Looking beyond a standard physical lets us act on early signals.

Heart

Advanced cardiovascular markers

ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP and homocysteine, beyond a basic cholesterol panel.

Metabolism

Blood sugar and insulin

Fasting insulin, HbA1c and glucose trends, years before diabetes shows up.

Hormones

Hormone and thyroid panels

How your hormones are changing, and whether therapy makes sense for you.

Nutrients

Micronutrient testing

Vitamins, minerals and omega-3s that support energy, bone and brain.

Genetics

Genetic and methylation testing

Your inherited risks and how your body handles nutrients and detox.

Environment

Gut and toxin testing

Hidden drivers of inflammation, from gut imbalances to chemical and mold exposure.

Therapies

Proven basics, plus what’s new

Foundations

Nutrition, strength training, sleep and stress, set to your labs. These still do the most heavy lifting.

Cellular support

IV and micronutrient therapy, ozone and EBOO, chosen when your results and goals call for them.

Hormone optimization

Bioidentical hormone therapy, including BioTE, prescribed carefully and monitored with regular labs.

An often-missed piece

Sleep and breathing

How you breathe at night affects your heart, brain, mood and hormones. With my background in airway health, I screen for it and work with sleep, airway and dental specialists when needed.

I stay current with longevity research and collaborate with your other doctors, so new options are weighed against the evidence before we use them.

Home / How it works

A plan built around you.

You know your life. I know the medicine. Together we build a plan that fits how you actually live, not a template.

The approach

How we build your plan

  1. We start with the full picture

Your history in depth, plus functional labs that go beyond a standard panel: hormones, gut, nutrients, toxins and genetics.

  2. We clear what’s getting in the way

Poor sleep, blood sugar swings, gut issues, chronic stress, toxin exposures. Removing these often changes more than adding anything.

  3. We support your body’s own ability to heal

Nutrition, rest, daily rhythm and a calmer nervous system, so your body can get out of survival mode and do its job.

  4. We strengthen what’s depleted

Targeted nutrients, botanicals, IV and micronutrient therapy, and nervous system support like craniosacral therapy and NET.

  5. Stronger tools when they’re truly needed

Hormone therapy, medication or a referral to a specialist. Sometimes that’s step one.

If it doesn’t fit your life, we adjust. Every recommendation has to work in the real world: your schedule, your budget and your preferences. We’re a team, and the plan changes as you do.

Lab results

Why “normal” isn’t the whole story

Normal isn’t the same as optimal. Standard reference ranges are built to flag disease, so a result can sit inside them and still be worth acting on, especially alongside your symptoms and trends over time.

Examples only. Reference ranges vary by lab, and no single number tells the full story.

Your visits

What to expect

  3. Functional lab testing

When it adds useful information: hormone, GI, toxin, genetic or methylation testing, chosen for you.

  4. Lab review

We go through your results together and refine the plan.

  5. Follow-ups

Usually every 4 to 6 weeks for the first few months, then as needed.

Home / Kids and families

Care for kids, and the whole family.

Gentle, root-cause care for children, with parents as part of every step. I work alongside your child’s pediatrician, dentist and airway team.

Common reasons kids come in

Whatever brings them in

  • Tummy aches and constipation
  • Eczema and skin rashes
  • Frequent colds and ear infections
  • Allergies
  • Sleep problems and mouth breathing
  • Focus, attention and behavior
  • Picky eating and nutrition
  • Anxiety and big emotions

How it works with kids

Made for kids, built with parents

Together

Parents are part of every visit

You know your child best. We decide on the plan together, and I explain the why behind each step.

Gentle

Kid-friendly from start to finish

Simple changes first, with doses, tastes and routines that work for children and busy families.

Connected

Part of your child’s care team

I work alongside your pediatrician, dentist and airway specialists, not in place of them.

Whole family

Parents welcome too

Families often see me together. Your health matters as much as theirs.

Home / Gut health

Gut health

Bloating, reflux and irregular digestion are common, but they’re not something you have to live with. Your gut also shapes your hormones, mood, skin and immune system, so getting it right changes more than digestion.

Common reasons people come in

When digestion feels off

  • Bloating and gas
  • IBS
  • Constipation
  • Loose stools
  • Reflux and heartburn
  • Food reactions
  • Gut symptoms with stress or anxiety
  • Skin flares linked to digestion

Your gut is in conversation with

  • Hormones, including how estrogen is cleared
  • Brain and mood
  • Immune system
  • Skin
  • Blood sugar

When it’s off, you might notice

    Your gut barrier

    A barrier one cell thick

Your gut lining is a single layer of cells, sealed tightly together and protected by mucus and helpful bacteria. It lets nutrients in and keeps everything else out. Everyday stressors can wear it down. This is called intestinal permeability, or “leaky gut.”

    Tap what applies

A healthy lining: sealed cells, a thick mucus layer and plenty of helpful bacteria.

    Immune systemCalm

Simplified illustration. Real gut lining has trillions of cells and microbes.

    Testing

    Look closer when it helps

We start with your history and symptoms. When they don’t add up, testing shows what’s actually happening.

    Stool analysis

    Comprehensive GI testing

Digestion, inflammation, gut bacteria balance and signs of infection.

    Breath testing

    Bacterial overgrowth

Breath tests that look for bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, when symptoms point that way.

    Blood work

    Nutrients and inflammation

Iron, B12, vitamin D and inflammation markers that often reflect how well you absorb food.

    Hormones

    Hormone metabolism

How your body processes and clears hormones, which depends partly on your gut.

    Approach

    How we work on it

    Remove what irritates

Foods, timing, stress and other triggers that keep your gut inflamed.

    Rebuild and repair

Nutrition, botanicals and targeted nutrients to support digestion and the gut lining.

    Calm the gut–brain loop

Your gut can’t digest well in survival mode. Calming your nervous system, in person or virtually, helps it reset.

    Questions

    Common questions

Can a naturopathic doctor help with bloating?

Yes. Bloating usually has more than one cause, from food and stress to hormones and gut bacteria. We look for the pattern behind yours and address it directly.

Do I need a stool test?

Not always. Many people improve with history-guided changes first. Testing helps when symptoms are persistent, severe or don’t respond.

How long does it take to improve gut health?

Many people notice changes within a few weeks. Longer-standing issues often take a few months of steady work.

Home / Stress, anxiety and sleep

    Stress, anxiety and sleep.

When your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, everything feels harder: sleep, digestion, mood and hormones. How you breathe, day and night, is a big part of that picture, and one that’s often missed.

    Common reasons people come in

When your body can’t switch off

    • Anxiety and feeling on edge
    • Low mood and depression
    • Panic or racing thoughts
    • Chronic stress and burnout
    • Trouble falling or staying asleep
    • Waking up tired
    • Mouth breathing
    • Snoring
    • Brain fog
    • Tension headaches

    Why breathing matters

    An often-missed piece

Mouth breathing and disrupted breathing at night can raise stress hormones, affect blood sugar and leave you tired no matter how long you sleep. I screen for it and work with airway, dental and sleep specialists. This is just as important for kids. Kids and families

    Testing

    Find what’s keeping you wired

Stress, poor sleep and low energy usually have a root cause. These are some I look for.

    Nervous system

    Nervous system dysregulation

When your body is stuck in fight-or-flight, it can’t fully rest, even when nothing is wrong on paper.

    Airway

    Breathing and airway

Mouth breathing, snoring, tongue tie and jaw structure can disrupt sleep. I screen for these and work with airway and myofunctional specialists.

    Stress hormones

    Cortisol rhythm

How your stress hormone rises and falls across the day.

    Hormones

    Hormone and thyroid panels

Shifts that affect sleep, mood and anxiety, including perimenopause.

    Metabolism

    Blood sugar

Dips during the night can wake you up and fuel anxiety.

    Nutrients

    Magnesium, iron and B vitamins

Common gaps that affect sleep, mood and energy.

    Approach

    How we calm the system

    Regulate the nervous system

Botanicals, targeted nutrients and simple daily tools to help your body shift out of survival mode, with hands-on options like craniosacral therapy when we meet in person.

    Rebuild sleep foundations

Daily rhythm, light, food timing and wind-down habits that fit your real life.

    Support breathing and airway

Screening and coordination with airway and dental specialists, plus targeted nutrients and botanicals.

    Questions

    Common questions

Can a naturopathic doctor help with anxiety?

Yes, as part of your care team. We look at physical drivers like blood sugar, hormones, gut health and sleep, alongside any support you get from a therapist or psychiatrist.

    Why does mouth breathing matter?

Breathing through your mouth, especially at night, is linked to poorer sleep quality, daytime fatigue and a more stressed nervous system. It’s common and often overlooked.

    Do you treat sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is diagnosed with a sleep study, so I refer for that. I can then support you alongside your sleep doctor and airway team.

    Home / Naturopathic medicine

    What is naturopathic medicine?

Medicine that asks why, not just what. Naturopathic doctors are trained in conventional diagnosis and in natural therapies, and use both.

My grandpa once asked how I could find the root cause of anything. “The body doesn’t talk to you,” he said.
“It does,” I told him. “Through symptoms. You just have to learn the language.”

    The foundation

Your body is built to heal

Your body is constantly working to repair and rebalance itself. Cuts close, bones knit, your immune system learns. Naturopathic medicine is built on supporting that process: removing what gets in its way, giving your body what it needs, and using stronger tools when it needs more help.

    Six principles

    What guides every visit

    Your body can heal

Given the right conditions, your body knows how to repair and rebalance.

    Healing power of nature

    Find the cause

Symptoms are messages. We look for what’s driving them.

    Identify and treat the cause

    Gentle first

Start with the least invasive option that works, and step up when needed.

    First, do no harm

    You’ll understand your body

You leave knowing what’s happening and why your plan makes sense.

    Doctor as teacher

    Nothing happens in isolation

Body, mind, environment and genetics are all part of the picture.

    Treat the whole person

    Stay ahead

The best time to act is before symptoms show up.

    Prevention

    Training

    Licensed doctors, rigorously trained

    Four-year doctoral program

Biomedical sciences, diagnosis, pharmacology, nutrition and botanical medicine, with supervised clinical training.

    National board exams

Naturopathic doctors pass the NPLEX board exams before they can be licensed.

    Licensed in California

Regulated by the state’s Naturopathic Medicine Committee, which sets standards for practice and title use.

It’s not us versus them. It’s us, for you. Naturopathic doctors work alongside your other doctors, so your care fits together. How it works

    Questions

    Common questions

Is a naturopathic doctor a real doctor?

Yes. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) hold a doctoral degree, pass national board exams and are licensed by the state. NDs are not medical doctors (MDs), and the training and scope of practice are different.

What’s the difference between an ND and a naturopath?

In California, only licensed naturopathic doctors can use the ND title. “Naturopath” is sometimes used by people without a doctoral degree or license.

Do you replace my primary care doctor?

I work alongside your primary care doctor and specialists. Many patients see both, and I’m happy to coordinate with your care team.
